INTRODUCTION

The SISD Athletic Handbook is a reference tool for coaches, trainers, administrators and
district staff. University Interscholastic League (UIL) information including the current UIL/TEA
Side-By-Side document along with 1AAAAA District Executive Committee (DEC) Procedures
and SISD Policy and Regulations are included in this document. This handbook is in its 9th year
and went through a moderate revision for 2004 - 2005. Hopefully it will also serve as a resource

MISSION, GOALS & CORE VALUES

The Socorro Independent School District Exists to Maximize Our Children's Academic,
Artistic, Athletic and Social Skills.

The SISD Athletics staff believes that athletic participation improves our student's lives.
The goals of the SISD Athletic Department are:
1. Students will be provided with opportunities to practice, travel and compete in safe
environments.
2. Students will be provided with opportunities to apply learned skills and strategies
effectively in competitive settings.
3. Current and accurate athletic information will be provided to staff, students, parents,
community members and the world community.
4. SISD coaching and training staffs will be encouraged to develop and demonstrate
high standards of professionalism.

The SISD Athletic Department staff will model the core values of SISD.
1. We account for our actions and decisions ensuring that they positively impact our
students, staff and community members.
2. We commit to providing safe and fair learning activities.
3. We trust our cohorts and together will strive to serve as ambassadors for the

tudent Activities Complex, at athletic venues throughout the SISD and at athletic

SISD ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT INFORMATION

The Athletic Department offices and staff are located at Socorro ISD's Student Activities Complex (SAC). As of July 1, 2004, the Aquatics staff joined the Athletics staff in the Athletics Department. Effective September 2006, Athletics oversees the Health and Physical Education (HPE) teachers and the Elementary Volunteers Sports Program. Joe Hernandez is the teacher specialist who coordinates the volunteers. The Athletic Director will oversee the department, which is part of the Administrative Services Department for SISD. Barry Edwards is the Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services.

DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES & SERVICES

The Athletic Department staff effectively organizes and conducts the SISD Athletic
Program at the district's high schools, middle schools and Student Activities Complex (SAC).
The sports include: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf (HS only), soccer, softball, swimming (HS only), tennis, track, volleyball, wrestling (HS only).

The director oversees all aspects of the athletic program including the scheduling of athletic events, coordinating with the TASO officiating organizations and serving as a non-voting member of the 1AAAAA District Executive Committee (DEC).
The director also:
1. Oversees the master calendar for the SAC including events at the stadium and aquatics center.
2. Develops and initiates contracts for use of the stadium or aquatics center.
3. Oversees the concessions operations at the stadium and the aquatics center.
4. Oversees the departmental budgets and assigns secondary campus line items for athletics.

The athletics coordinator works with all sports programs and assumes assigned scheduling duties.
The coordinator also works with TASO groups and the DECs.
The athletics coordinator also:
1. Oversees technology applications for the individual sports.
2. Oversees the athletic training program and medical coverage for middle school events.
3. Coordinates the develop of Crisis Management Plan (CMP) for the SISD Student Activities
Complex (SAC).

The administrative assistant organizes departmental files, completes requisitions and maintains
the inventory at the annex and stadium.
The administrative assistant also:
1. Oversees the game ticket distribution and accounting procedures.
2. Makes arrangements for all scouting and post season travel.
3. Serves as the Webmaster for the SISD Athletics Web Page.

The aquatics coordinator oversees the competitive swimming programs, learn to swim programs,
other aquatic activities and events and the monitoring of pool conditions.
The aquatics coordinator also:
1. Oversees the master schedule and staff assignments for the aquatics center.
2. Coordinates the aquatics budget and expenditures.
3. Works with the SISD competitive swimming teams in organizing practice times and competitive events.
4. Coordinates the SISD Physical Education and Health program.

The aquatics technicians assist the coordinator with the various programs, staff assignments, staff training and monitoring of pool conditions.

The secretary organizes departmental files, completes requisitions and maintains the inventory at
the aquatics center.
The secretary also:
1. Serves as the Webmaster for the SISD Aquatics Web Page.
2. Organizes user and program data.
