Middle School Athletic Participation 1999-2000
This is
the second year for this report and it offers a better representation of
SISD middle school athletic participation because the data collection was
more than 90% complete and the gaps in the collection could be estimated
through a sample adjustment. This report will give us a baseline for SISD
athletic participation.
The data the report is based on are roster lists submitted by the coaches
and collected by the campus athletic coordinators at the conclusion of the
seasons. The roster lists indicate the athlete's name and student ID number
and include any athlete who participated in one or more contests during
the season, including participation in both A and B volleyball or basketball.
Another part of this report is the complete listing of all 8th grade athletic
participants by school and sport(s). This data has been prepared through
Excel Software and will be produced separately in a hard copy format as
an appendix. Copies of this data will be provided to SISD middle school
principals and athletic coordinators, SISD high school principals and head
coaches and to the Assistant Superintendent of Administration. This information
will assist head coaches at the high schools in identifying incoming 9th
graders. Robert Rojas completed this portion of the report on June 14, 1999.
The following chart identifies 8th Boys athletic participation by school
and sport. The totals column represents the boys who played one or more
sports. NR indicates that there was no report for that school in that sport.
It is likely that basketball was underreported at all campuses except Clarke.
Basketball numbers should include A and B team players.
| 8th Boys | Clarke | Montwood | Sanchez | Slider | Socorro |
| Baseball | 12 | 21 | 16 | 15 | 13 |
| Basketball | 29 | 12 | 15 | 17 | NR |
| Cross Country | 4 | 7 | 9 | 2 | 2 |

| Total | 80 | 74 | 61 | 69 | 45+ |
The following chart has total participation by sport for 8th and 7th Boys. The adjusted total represents the actual total if all five schools reported participation or the adjusted total if fewer than five schools reported and the average was used to fill in the no report as a best guess estimate for the missing report. In the four sport seasons the participation totals vary with 431 boys playing in the fall, 176 boys playing in the winter, 180 boys playing in the early spring and 321 boys playing in the spring.
| Boys Sports | 8th Total | Average | Adjusted 8th Total | 7th Total | Average | Adjusted 7th Total |
| Baseball | 77 | 15.4 | 77 | 68 | 13.6 | 68 |
| Basketball | 73 | 18.3 | 91 | 51 | 17 | 85 |

The following chart identifies 7th grade boys athletic participation by school and sport. The totals column was not calculated for 7th grade. NR indicates that there was no report for that school in that sport. Basketball is not accurate with one program reporting A and B team players and two programs not reporting at all.
| 7th Boys | Clarke | Montwood | Sanchez | Slider | Socorro |
| Baseball | 12 | 13 | 10 | 20 | 13 |
| Basketball | 30 | NR | 10 | 11 | NR |

The following chart identifies 8th Girls athletic participation by school and sport. The totals column represents the girls who played one or more sports. NR indicates that there was no report for that school in that sport. Basketball again is inaccurately represented.
| 8th Girls | Clarke | Montwood | Sanchez | Slider | Socorro |
| Basketball | 28 | 10 | 14 | 20 | NR |
| Cross Country | 4 | 1 | 9 | 21 | 3 |

The following
chart has total participation by sport for 8th and 7th Girls. The adjusted
total represents the actual total if all five schools reported participation
or the adjusted total if fewer than five schools reported and the average
was use to fill in the no report as a best guess estimate for the missing
report.
During the four sport seasons the participation varies somewhat with 243
girls in the fall, 191 girls in the winter, 162 girls in the early spring
and 280 girls in the late spring.
| Girls Sports | 8th Total | Average | Adjusted 8th Total | 7th Total | Average | Adjusted 7th Total |
| Basketball | 72 | 18 | 90 | 81 | 20.3 | 101 |

The following chart identifies 7th Girls participants by school and sport. The totals column was not calculated for 7th grade. NR indicates that there was no report for that school in that sport. The numbers for Montwood, Socorro and Sanchez volleyball are questionable with A and B teams on the campuses.
| 7th Girls | Clarke | Montwood | Sanchez | Slider | Socorro |

The final chart of this report portrays total participation in the middle school athletic programs. The adjusted totals are used the sport counts and totals. The average of all schools gives an indication of the number of students that participate on a campus. The number of participants is a more exact count, but it cannot be calculated without 100% reporting by each and all campuses.

As a baseline study, this information serves as a starting point for analysis of the middle school athletic program participation. Discussion of specific campus programs, specific sports programs and goals for 1999-2000 can be discussed with campus administrators and coaches using this information. Every attempt will be made in 1999-2000 to obtain all rosters including A and B team lists in basketball and volleyball.Until 100% of the data is collected, this type of "snapshot" will be a bit out of focus.
The study
will also allow the SISD staff to make "wiser" decisions in program
planning. A pair of program proposals have been presented for consideration
for 1999-2000. Tennis has been proposed for November- December 1999 and
swimming has been proposed for February-March 2000. These programs in the
winter and early spring occur in the lowest participation times for middle
school athletics. In the fall of 1998, 673 student athletes participated.
In the late spring of 1999, 611 student athletes participated. In the winter
and early spring, 367 and 342 student athletes participated respectively.
It is hoped that student athletes who participate in the fall or late spring
would try out for these sports and join other students who are interested
in trying competitive tennis and swimming.
This study numerically portrays one of the finest middle school athletic
programs in Texas. The opportunities for athletic participation in the Socorro
ISD middle schools are only equalled by San Elizario ISD in West Texas.
With the addition of tennis and swimming, there will be no equal.
